Research Fellow

Employing Hospital and Department:        Ragon Institute of MGH, MIT, and Harvard   Minimum degree and field of knowledge:  MS and/or PhD Years experience required:  0-2   Summary: Vaccines represent one of the most effective global health interventions -preventing millions of deaths annually. However, vaccine design efforts continue to fail against some of the deadliest global pathogens, primarily due to a lack of understanding the immune responses that are required for protection. While antibodies serve as the primary correlate of protection following most vaccines, their mechanism of action varies by pathogen and vaccine. Thus to overcome this major knowledge gap - on how antibodies work and prevent disease, Dr. Alter's laboratory has developed a set of unique high throughput assays that provide an unprecedented depth of understanding of the role of antibodies in protection against infectious disease. The integration of this novel ANTIBODY-OMIC technology with other OMIC tools offers an unparalleled opportunity to dissect the humoral immune response across diseases - providing a direct translational path to improving health and preventing disease. However, tools to integrate OMIC tools - particularly antibody-OMIC data - are still lacking. Thus the Alter lab seeks to recruit the brightest, creative computational minds to begin to close this knowledge gap. The computational fellow will sit at the interface of OMIC technologies and analytical approaches, developing novel strategies to mine, collect, and interpret data across infectious and non-infectious diseases. The candidate will work with immunologists, vaccinologists and biochemists to understand these novel complex data - but also forge forwards, constantly pushing the evolution of the technology. The candidate will work across both academic and industry collaborations.   Job Duties:  The Computational Immunologist (CI) will work closely with Dr. Alter and other research fellows in the laboratory to develop, execute, and interpret projects. The CI will work with project managers as well to shape collaborations and will report findings to collaborative partners, including both academic and industrial teams.   Laboratory Responsibilities: Collect, analyze, integrate data Apply standard computational analyses (PCA, PLS, LASSO, Random Forest, SVM, etc) Oversee and develop novel research projects Develop novel analytical approaches to push data interpretation Develop an independent research program to advance understanding of human disease Act as a liaison between Alter lab and collaborative groups - for project coordination Meet bi-weekly with Dr. Alter to coordinate projects and lab activities Communication  Regular communication with supervisor and team/group colleagues (one-on-one and group meetings) Regular Ragon Institute-wide updates Experience/Qualifications: PhD Coding RNA sequencing analysis will be useful Must have good interpersonal skills  Qualifications  Minimum degree and field of knowledge:  MS and/or PhD Years experience required:  0-2 EEO Statement Massachusetts General Hospital is an Equal Opportunity Employer.  By embracing diverse skills, perspectives and ideas, we choose to lead.
